Abstract
As expanded rice hull was composted for 5 months at 50¡É with 300 mg¡¤L^(-1) urea and a microbial decomposing material, pH of expanded rice hull decreased to 5.0 and EC was within the range of 2.0¡2.5 dS¡¤m^(-1). CEC increased as decomposition proceeded, reading 120 meq/100 g at 60 days after decomposition treatment. During the decomposition process, the content of organic acids such as vanillic, p-coumaric, and p-hydroxybenzoic acids showed the peak at 5 days after treatment, and then decreased to the same level as those of control at 90 days after treatment. Extracts from uncomposted rice hull inhibited the growth and lateral rooting of cucumber seedlings. The longer the extraction time was, the greater the inhibition was. However, in the extracts from decomposed expanded rice hull, the growth of cucumber seedlings was normal regardless of extraction time.
